Today, we’re continuing the streak with our latest feature: scheduled updates for plugins. 

Say goodbye to the hassle of manual updates because streamlined plugin management tools are here and designed to elevate your site’s reliability and performance.

Plugin updates on your terms

With our newly launched scheduled updates, you can set the exact time and day for updates to occur, ensuring they happen when it’s most convenient for you and your clients. Best of all, this feature is free to use on our Creator and Entrepreneur plans. We won’t name names, but update scheduling is often a paid add-on at other hosts. 

At the selected time, our system automatically checks for available updates for the plugins included in your schedule. If updates are available, the system initiates the process, starting with a health check to ensure your site’s stability. Each plugin is updated individually, with another health check performed after each update to verify everything is functioning as expected.

Should a health check fail, our system will automatically roll back the update and restore the previous version. In the rare event that a rollback is unsuccessful, our dedicated Happiness Engineers are standing by to manually restore your site and assist you further.

To stay on top of what’s running in the background, you can opt to receive an email notification after each scheduled update summarizing the plugins that were updated as well as any update or health check failures. (These emails aren’t sent if no updates are found.) Additionally, you can easily monitor the results of the most recent schedule run on the Scheduled Updates screen under Plugins → Scheduled Updates.

Why does it matter?

Let’s say you run an ecommerce store on WordPress.com. Your site relies on key plugins for inventory management and payment processing. In the past, updating plugins during business hours led to downtime and lost sales. With scheduled updates, you can now plan updates for off-peak hours, when you’re at home restfully sleeping, ensuring essential functionality remains intact during busy periods while keeping your site secure and up-to-date. Scheduling updates for your payment processing plugin to occur every Sunday at 2:00 AM will greatly minimize shoppers’ disruptions.

Creating a schedule for plugin updates is fast and convenient:

  1. Install your desired plugins on a Creator or Entrepreneur site. (Plugins included in our plan offerings or purchased through the WordPress.com Marketplace are kept up-to-date by WordPress.com and do not need to be scheduled.)
  2. Navigate to the Updates Manager: Plugins → Scheduled Updates. (Click here to visit the multisite update manager.)
  3. Click “Add new schedule” and select your desired update frequency.
  4. Choose the plugins you’d like to include in the schedule.
  5. Click “Create” to activate your schedule.

As I was scrolling through Facebook, I stumbled upon a post by a local plant shop showcasing their plants. I was interested in one of their green offerings (not an unusual occurrence for me), so I sent them a message.

To my surprise, I was greeted with a friendly welcome message and a prompt to ask any questions I might have. Impressed by the quick and helpful replies, I decided to make a purchase. Before I knew it, Messenger had generated an automated invoice. 

The seamless integration of their business with Messenger blew me away.

This interaction with the plant shop opened my eyes to the power of Facebook Messenger for businesses. It’s no longer just for casual conversations with your friends—it can transform how you connect with your audience and customers.

Messenger has evolved from a simple chat box built into Facebook’s interface to its own platform with features to streamline communication and further grow your brand through one-on-one conversations with your customers.

For Mobile (iOS and Android):

    • Tap “Get” or “Install” to download the app.
  2. Log in or create an account
    • If you already have a Facebook account, enter your login credentials.

    • Grant Messenger access to your contacts (optional).
    • Choose your preferences for notifications and sounds.

In today’s increasingly digital world, you’ve probably had a run-in with Messenger and its features. But if you’re new to the platform or haven’t fully explored its capabilities, let me walk you through some of the key features and customizations I’ve found most helpful:

  • Chats: The main feature of Messenger, where you can exchange text messages, photos, videos, and GIFs with individuals or groups.
  • Calls & Video Calls: Connect in real-time with crystal-clear audio and video, perfect for virtual meetings or face-to-face customer support.
  • Stories: Share content that disappears after 24 hours. This is a fun way to keep your audience engaged with behind-the-scenes glimpses or quick promotions.
  • Channels: Create dedicated spaces for group or community chats, perfect for hosting live Q&As, workshops, or discussions around specific topics.
  • Payments: Send and receive money securely within the app, a convenient feature if you offer products or services. However, this feature might not be available in some regions.

Personalizing Facebook Messenger

To get the most out of Messenger, tailor it to your preferences:

  • Notifications: Control when and how you receive alerts for new messages, mentions, or reactions. 
  • Privacy: Manage who can see your active status, who can message you directly, and what information is visible on your profile. This is crucial for maintaining a professional image and protecting your personal information.
  • Appearance: While changing the appearance of your Messenger app is exciting, you’re only limited to changing in and out of dark mode. Unlike conversations with friends, you can’t change the theme and emoji of a business chat. 

Blocking someone on Facebook Messenger

While Messenger is great for connecting, there may be times when you need to block someone. For instance, imagine a customer who persistently sends inappropriate messages. In those cases, blocking can protect your professional space, keeping you productive and focused on the interactions that truly matter. Here’s how:

  1. Open the chat: Go to the conversation with the person you want to block.
  2. Tap their name: This will open their profile.
  1. Scroll down: Find and tap “Block.”
  1. Confirm: You’ll be asked to confirm your decision. Once you do, the person will no longer be able to message or call you.

Note: Blocking someone on Messenger also blocks them on Facebook.

Facebook Messenger for business

As mentioned, Facebook Messenger allows you to connect with your customers on a more personal level. It can help you answer customer questions, offer support, share promotions, and even drive sales. Here’s how to make the most of Messenger for your business:

  1. Create or Claim Your Business Page:
    • If you already have a personal profile, you can create a page associated with it and fill out your business information.
  2. Enable Messenger:
    • Go to your Page settings and navigate to the “Audience and visibility” section.
    • Then click “How people can find and contact you” and got to “Messaging.”
    • Make sure to turn on “Allow people and Pages to message your Page?” 

Using automated replies

One of Messenger’s most powerful features for businesses is automation. This allows you to provide quick responses even when you’re not online. Write a friendly welcome message that appears when someone first starts a conversation with your Page. This could include your hours of operation or a promise to respond as soon as possible.

You can also let them know you’re away and let them know how quickly they can expect a response.

  1. Head to your Facebook Page.
  2. In the top right corner, click on the Messages icon.
  3. Then click on Automations, and then click Create automation.
  1. From the menu on the left, select Greet people.
  1. Choose Instant reply and then click Create automation in the bottom right.
  2. Toggle the Instant reply switch to the ‘on’ position.
  1. Select the channel you want to use (Messenger) and type your welcome message in the Message field.
  2. Finally, click Save changes to activate your instant replies.

That’s it! You’re now ready to welcome customers with an automated greeting.

Using Messenger bots

Let’s be honest. There’s no chance our eyes are on Messenger 24/7. But imagine having a tireless assistant working round the clock to answer inquiries and even promote your products. Well, this is exactly what Messenger bots are.

When users click on your ad, they’re not directed to your page. Instead, they’re instantly connected to your Messenger bot or a live agent. To create an Ad, log in to your page and click the Messenger icon. This will take you to Messenger’s business dashboard. Then click “Create messaging ad.”

Remember my experience with the plant shop? They streamlined the entire buying process for me, from ordering, invoicing, payment, and shipment updates.

    How can I log out from Facebook Messenger?

    Logging out of Facebook Messenger depends on your device. On mobile, open the app, tap your profile picture, scroll down, and tap “Log Out.” On the desktop version, click your profile picture in the top right corner and select “Log Out.”

    How to deactivate from Facebook Messenger?

    Deactivating Facebook Messenger means temporarily disabling it, and you can reactivate it anytime.
